I’ve been published a little over a year now and 30 something books later I’ve taken some time to reflect on how things are going and the criticism of my writing. And when I stopped focusing on the individual comments I noticed something that I wasn’t sure made me want to laugh or cringe.
There’s a pattern, or a cycle.
My first few books all the negative comments were that I was a hack. I was copying everyone under the sun and couldn’t come up with my own ideas if they bit me in the ass.
The next few were all about the crying. My characters were pussies, needed to wear skirts, weren’t real men, and on and on.
Then it was the sex. The scenes were the same as everyone else’s, there weren’t enough, or there were too many. Or they weren’t realistic. (And people wonder why authors don’t listen to too many comments and reviews from strangers when no one can have the same type of criticism.) But they were all about the sex in the books.
Next it was the pet names. I used baby too often or babe (which I rarely use) or honey, or whatever pet name, which is actually a theme and personal joke of mine in Purrfect Mates in response to that and how no matter what I do some people just love to hate it. Why they keep reading my stuff when they seem to despise it I have no idea… what’s the definition of insanity again?
After that it was the Irish accents. God help me if I hear one more time I couldn’t write a brogue or knew anyone Irish I was ready to scream. Never mind that I’m last name is FLYNN and I can speak in a perfect brogue... but speaking and writing it are two very different things. There are different ways to do everything in life, including writing. I went with phonetically doing it instead of other options because I thought that would be best.
Then it was the mountains of editor, spelling, and grammar errors. That one kinda got me so I started asking people for examples of mistakes. Am I saying my books are flawless, hell no. Every book has boo-boo’s but the replies I got to my inquiries… 90% of them were NOT mistakes. Kinda instead of kind of is not a mistake, it’s the way I talk and slang just like ain’t versus isn’t. Mother fucker can be two words or one, but when I say it out loud it sounds like two to me. You can hiss when it’s not just an “S” sound because hissing is also defined as an angry or emotional whisper.
Next few books was about me mostly writing in 1st person and how people missed so much of the book and characters because 1st person doesn’t go deep enough into the personal aspect of the story. That one confused the this out of me because to me nothing goes more in depth than 1st person, but I’ll get back to that one because that’s currently going on as well and I figured something out.
Now it’s the Midnight Matings series in general. And that one I want to address because it truly saddened me. I’ve gotten emails, reviews, comments, rude ass posts accusing my idea for the world the books are set in from being unbelievable to immoral forced matings to flat out rape. Unbelievable in fiction is part of fiction so I just sighed that some people were so quick to judge and jump on the criticism band wagon they seemed to miss the moral of the story. I tend to throw in a little political, stereotype breaking, or other ideas into my books as the underlying comments of the world around me.
The characters are forced to find a mate to join communities, packs, and species. I did get several people who got the parallelism… arranged marriages, which is very believable and happens all the time around the world. Yes, the Elders are like the parents who see a bigger picture and do what they think is right without considering the people involved. The books are from the mates perspectives and how hard it is to make their lives work when others step in where they’re not wanted. HOWEVER they are forced to find a mate amongst hundreds of hundreds of people at one very large conference. That is different and less “ouch” in my mind than a straight arranged marriage. And while the original idea was mine I do feel that bringing in Stormy Glenn and Gabrielle Evans helped mold the world to where we had lots and lots of fun bashing, beating, and flat out making the Elders the bad guys for having their heads up their asses at the idea they came up with. And rape? I have so many comments on that one but all of them would have my email full of responses because I yelled and opened my mouth. I do think if some people would stop being so quick to tear everything down and picking on every little aspect they’d “get” it and understand the moral to the story.
That being said, reading some of these comments finally had the light bulb going off over my head on the 1st person thing. It’s not 1st person that people keep complaining about… it’s that I don’t rotate it. I’m sitting here for months completely not getting why I get these emails saying that I don’t delve into the characters in my stories and only skim the surface when I write in first person instead of 3rd. It’s tense I write in, they’re actually wanting for me to go back to switching between characters. I have started it on a trial basis with the Hiding Hounds series just to see how it went over. One is 3rd person for one character & 1st person for the other. The second book is rotating first person which I had other authors and people warn me not to do because it was too confusing. Though I have to say I didn’t get one comment, email, or post as to that. But it’s also not something that’s done very often until recently when a few authors tried it after I did.
However… I find it takes away from the story when I jump back and forth from perspectives at times instead of really delving into what one character is thinking and dealing with. I had a long, long talk with my good friend Gabrielle Evans last night and decided to try something new with her encouragement. I asked her, “can’t I just write one half in one guy’s perspective and the last half in the other one’s.” And like my wonderful friend, she laughed at me and said, “you’re the damn author do what you want you goof.” Or something along those lines. I do call her wen I need a kick in the ass. So it works for us.
So, my fourth Midnight Matings book, Fur and Flightless will be half and half. And for the first time I’m listening to the random comments of strangers and willing to try something knew that hopefully will work for me as the author and keep my groove when I get all into my character telling the story and will give readers that both sides of the coin they’ve wanted… now that I get what people were saying. That being said, I’m honestly and truly hoping people share their opinions on what they thought after it comes out. POLIETLY. Rude people get no consideration in my world because my mommy taught me manners. But I do want honest.
That’s what’s in my crazy brain. I’ve been a bad blogger so I thought I’d share. Now I’m off to go finish my newest book and maybe find my bed at some point today. ~Joyee
YES! Joyee that's exactly why I prefer first person. To me it's the difference between a biography and an autobiography. Who better knows the range of human emotion than the person feeling it and perceiving the world through that lens? I thought I was all alone in my perspective after writing Hermes Online. Thanks for sharing that. Now how'd you manage 30+ books in a bit more than a year?? Wow. I'm impressed! ~ Rose Anderson :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen books in 1st person, 3rd person and books that change perspective. I don't really care which tense the book is written in, as long as the story is good. I do like the first person b/c you really get to know that character. But I also like the global, all-knowing of 3rd person.
ReplyDeleteFor the ones that change perspective, it does need to be a very definite change (i.e. one chapter or break from one character followed by a chapter or break from the other). As a reader, as long as I can figure out who's 'talking', I'm good. I've read books where I could never figure out who was saying what to whom. It was so confusing that I quit reading and put the author on the 'do not read' list.
That being said, I have to agree with your friend. You're the author so you get to decide. :)
Hi Joyee. Your blog made me sad and mad! I've read your books, they are great! I absolutely love 1st person. In fact, two of my own novels are written that way. But as a writer, you have the prerogative to however the characters are demanding you to. That's between your editor and yourself. I can't believe the nerve of some people. Chin up! Just know you are a wonderful writer!
ReplyDeleteJoyee, I feel really sad for you that you always have to justify yourself. I personally enjoyed every one of your books. Yes, there are some that I enjoy more than others but I won't ask you to change a think. You are the author, not me. I am enjoying the Midnight Mating series so very much. You should hold your head up high and be proud of yourself. You accomplished a lot in such a short period of time. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteLisa
P.S. I liked the 1st person books a little better myself but that won't stop me from reading and enjoying your stories.
Well Joyee, I honestly don't know what to say to your above post.. I've read every story you've written and have to say, I've enjoyed them all. Yes there are some that I love more than the others, but I could probably quote them all. It upsets me that people are so hard on my favorite authors. If they aren't criticizing your grammer, speech or ideas, they are stealing your books. When you get the negative ratings, demeaning comments or crazy issues remember You've accomplished so much, you met your goal of 30 published books in a year,(which is dang impressive) you have an amazing yahoo group and loyal, demanding followers who are patiently awaiting your next awesome book. So hold your head high and tell those who are rude and demeaning to back off.
ReplyDeleteJoyee, I can honestly say without a doubt that I love your books. I am a VERY heavy reader. Meaning if things go my way I can read 15+ books a week. Yes there are some weeks I read more than others, but you need to know that you are a wonderful writer. If I didn't like your writing, I wouldn't buy it and follow you. I like how you write and your imagination. I LOVE the Midnight Matings books, ALL OF THEM. They are creative and take you to another world. I like that I can escape to somewhere else, that is the reason I read. So keep writing however you want. I agree with Gabrielle Evans, You are the author write how and what you want. I just know that I want to read whatever you come up with next.
ReplyDeleteJoyee, You are my favorite author. I have ALL your books & I have read & re-read each & every 1 of those books a dozen times.
ReplyDeleteAll the haters out there probably don't have lives & are bored. They think picking on someone who spends her time & effort creating amazing books such as yourself, will ease there boredom.
My opinion to you is take Gabrielle's advice & remember you are the author & you can do whatever you want. Continue writing GREAT books & whoever doesn't like it, should try to write a book half as good as 1 of yours & let us judge them. ;)
BTW, I check your site weekly to see when your next release will be. Don't you have a book that will be released in July???
All the best & I hope all the positive comments from your fans keeps you going & strong.
Jewel
I am just reading your blog and at first I was in shock and in disbelief. I have read every book you have written and I can honestly say I have love them all. I read them because I honestly think they are good stories to crawl up to when I want to escape to that other place. The sex scenes is just a bonus for me, Lol..... I prefer books in first person cause I know this is what the character is feeling, not what someone is observing or telling me he did this or that. I get it, I hate that you have to attempt to satisfy the masses. I love your books, all of them. when I see there is a new release coming I immediately order it sometimes I dont even read what its about. For example, Midnight mating, I just bought cause it was by my three favorite authors............And believe me I was not at all disappointed.

ReplyDeleteshort & quick but heartfelt
I LOVE YOUR BOOKS :)

Hi Joyee,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all...I LOVE YOU!!! Many virtual kisses and hugs! lol....
second... I'm so shocked and sad to hear that people are rude and inconsiderate! I have read all of your books.
I LOVE THEM!! ah! I wish I could give you a hug because I just love all of your worlds. I'm so grateful to be able to see into them!
All of your characters are people I've come to love and cherish all the books I have collected from you.
And honestly, I don't really mind what perspective I read from. I really enjoy them all! but if I had to choose, then I'd say first person is the one I love because sometimes, I really wish to see what a character is thinking. All of your stories are perfect! I honestly didn't even notice the difference when I went from one book to another. All I really noticed and cared for is that your worlds continue to be as wonderful and creative as always! lol...
I may not be a good writer or whatever, since I only write fanfics, but I believe you should write as your characters tell you to. Or really... how YOU feel they should be introduced in the world. otherwise I think, your whole story will sound forced and not even you will enjoy writing or reading it. I say to Hell with all those rude A-holes. Keep your world just how it is or how you want it to be. I love your worlds and am sure that plenty of other like me out there love your worlds just as they are, too.

HI Joyee,
ReplyDeleteIf you feeling worn down with the people out there I figure you are not getting enough good comments.
So here is mine :) Love your works(anyway you write them, its all good :))
I check all over the net to make sure I dont miss a release :)
Much Love,
Felicity
P.S. love love love the Dragon's
Hi all I have to say is I have read all of your books that I can get my hIands on and all those stupid comments are simply people who have no idea how hard it is for you to write a book and are probably the type that get mad if a book dosen't happen how they want it so don't worry a out all of your books are awesome and however you want to write it they still will be awesome I love you and all of your books :-)
ReplyDeleteHello my lovely,
ReplyDeleteYou know my opinions on this whole matter, since you wanted nice comments i'll refrain from repeating my response to the imbeciles, ahem, persons of dubious intelligence, and say that you keep doing what you do so well and they can go to hell...(at least it rhymed :). I love you and know that you are a wonderful, sensitive, caring, kick ass woman and you are the best out there. So you go give Marius a rub and a hug from me and then veg for a bit. Then get you ass back to work!
I have to say, my daughter and I are huge fans of your writing. She's actually the one who got me hooked :) (My daughter is 21, so I promise I'm not corrupting her lol, think it's fair to say it's the other way round most days!) I can honestly say that I've never enjoyed books more than since I've discovered yours. I've never read a review of your books, seeing as I'm not one to care about the opinions of anyone other than my family & friends, but it sounds like a whole lot of sour grapes to me. Those reviewers only wish they had your talent and fans :)
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work, my daughter and I continue to haunt Bookstrand anytime it gets close to release time for any of your books :)
I wanna start by saying that I have read, reread and read again all of your books. I love them all. When a stoy is good and told well I don't really care about or even notice any small grammer flubs. I do have to say I am not a fan of 1st person. Just for the simple fact of the way my brain works. As I read I can see the story as if it were happening in front of me. With 1st person it's like someone is standing in front of me retelling a story instead of letting me see it myself. It makes it harder for me to see the whole picture, but it doesn't take away from a good story.
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with your characters. I think you do a great job of keeping them balanced. A bit of wickedly awesome tossed into a man you love and who loves you back with a firey passion. Who could not love a man like that. A man doesn't have to be emotionless and closed off all the time. And I do so love your men! :)
Someone once told me that you have to please yourself before you can please others. LOL, you can take that many ways, but I think it works here as well. You do good work. You keep writing and I'll keep buying. Mary
Hello! I have to say I was surprised that people complain so much about your books. From the first one I read, which was co-written with Stormy Glenn, I have been hooked and own everything you have written. What I want to tell those critics is this: If you have such awesome ideas and are such experts...write your own darn books!! Writing is hard work and the authors put themselves out there for the world to read...must be kinda scary. So keep at it!! I love your work and am constantly checking for your upcoming stories. Everyone always thinks that they can do better or look for moronic political trash to tear things apart. So don't take it personal. You have lots of people who love what you do!
ReplyDeletehi, i would just like to say that i find the books with 1st person tend to delve into the psych of the character with the most emotional baggage or the biggest attitude i found it helps you understand their viewpoint better i mean anyone can be an alpha male or a twink but its the emotions involved that make the story worth reading, you project the emotions beautifully and that is the reason you are one of my favourite authors, write how you are comfortable writing and you can bet that people will keep reading them and coming back for more. thank you.
